E-MINI-LXO: Common Syslog System and Alert Questions

1.       What is the facility number?

  • Facility No is 16 (local use 0 as per syslog protocol)

2.       Severity – what is the value and does it change from message to message?

  • For alerts, Severity is 0 (Emergency).
  • For log full messages, Severity is 1 (Alert).
  • For logging data through Syslog, Severity is 6 (Informational)

3.       Is the Hostname the IP address of the unit or its Enterprise name?

  • Hostname is the IP address of the unit.

4.       What is the timestamp format?

  • Timestamp is in format  %b %d %H:%M:%S
  • %b is the abbreviated name of the month, e.g. Oct
  • %d = day
  • %H = hour
  • %M = minute
  • %S = second

5.       What does the message content look like?

  • Example message content for alerts:
  • ENTERPRISE: some_name LOCATION: some_address CONTACT: contact_person DESCRIPTION: Temperature sensor #5 MESSAGE Sensor value crossed over critical thresholds
  • Example message content for logging data:
  • ENTERPRISE: some_name LOCATION: some_address CONTACT: contact_person DESCRIPTION: Temperature sensor #5 TIME: month-date-year hour:minute:second AM/PM TYPE: Temperature Combo VALUE: XX.X°F
